What does it cost to move a boat from New York to Florida?

More lines than most people expect, and off Long Island a couple that owners in other states never think about.

A road move on the owner’s own rig has to cover the driver’s days, flights out and home, lodging and meals on the road, fuel at towing mileage rather than highway mileage, tolls, permits in every state the load crosses, escorts where the beam requires them, and haul-out and launch at either end.

A professional transporter with their own truck and trailer prices differently, because the equipment, the authority and the insurance are all theirs. Comparing the two on headline price alone is misleading, they are different products, and on this route the honest comparison is what the whole job costs door to water, not the day rate.

The number that decides everything

Whatever the total, the figure that determines whether the move actually happens is what the driver earns per day. From Long Island or the lower Hudson it is roughly 1,200 to 1,400 miles to Florida depending where she is going, call it three days on the road each way in the fall, including the flight home. If that does not clear a sensible day rate, the trip does not get taken, however the rest of the maths looks.

Rather than publish a number that will be wrong for your boat, the cost planner lets you enter real quotes and see the total, and what it works out to per day for whoever is driving.

The New York part nobody warns you about

Getting her off the Island

If the boat lives on Long Island, the move starts before the highway does. An oversize load cannot take a ferry, so the only way west is by road through the bridges, the Throgs Neck, the Whitestone, or south over the Verrazzano, and every one of them is a toll that an over-width permit makes dearer. Add the metro itself: a wide load through the New York approaches moves under restricted hours, often at first light, and a permit that names the route will name those too.

None of it is a reason not to go. It is a reason to have the driver price the escape from the Island as its own leg, because a transporter who works this corridor already knows which crossing takes the beam and which hour the permit allows, and a quote that leaves it out is a quote that will grow.

What sets the paperwork

Beam decides most of it

Anything wider than 8 feet 6 inches is an oversize load in New York, the same as in every state the boat will cross on the way down. The beam is what pulls in the permits, sets whether an escort rides along, and fixes the route, a wider boat cannot simply take the shortest line south. If you are not sure whether your beam crosses the threshold, the permits guide lays out where the line sits and the two things that catch people out.

Put your own numbers in

The cost tab adds up the driver, the road and the paperwork from your own route and your own dates, and tells you what it works out to per day for whoever is driving. Open the cost planner.

If she is on the Island

Getting off Long Island

The parkways are out, there are three ways across, and which one she takes is the permit’s decision rather than the driver’s. Read the Long Island guide.
