What does it cost to move a boat from New Jersey to Florida?
The shortest road start of any Northeast state, which does not mean the cheapest, because the driver’s days still decide it.
A road move on the owner’s own rig has to cover the driver’s days, flights out and home, lodging and meals on the road, fuel at towing mileage rather than highway mileage, tolls, permits in every state the load crosses, escorts where the beam requires them, and haul-out and launch at either end.
A professional transporter with their own truck and trailer prices differently, because the equipment, the authority and the insurance are all theirs. Comparing the two on headline price alone is misleading, they are different products, and the honest comparison is what the whole job costs door to water.
The number that decides everything
Whatever the total, the figure that determines whether the move actually happens is what the driver earns per day. From the Shore or Raritan Bay it is roughly 1,100 to 1,250 miles to Florida depending where she is going, the shortest of the Northeast runs, but still call it three days on the road each way in the fall including the flight home. If that does not clear a sensible day rate, the trip does not get taken, however short the highway looks.
Rather than publish a number that will be wrong for your boat, the cost planner lets you enter real quotes and see the total, and what it works out to per day for whoever is driving.
Off the barrier island first
New Jersey’s advantage is real: the Turnpike runs the length of the state and drops a load straight onto the corridor south, with none of the island or canal geography the states around it fight. But a lot of the Shore’s boats do not start on the mainland. They start on a barrier island, Long Beach Island and its neighbours, and the only way off is a causeway, often a single carriageway that a wide load crosses under its own permitted hours and sometimes behind an escort.
It is a short leg, but it is the leg that sets the day. A driver who works this coast knows which causeway takes the beam and when the permit lets them cross it, and once they are over it and onto the Turnpike, New Jersey is the easiest launch south there is.
Beam decides most of it
Anything wider than 8 feet 6 inches is an oversize load in New Jersey, the same as in every state the boat will cross on the way down. The beam is what pulls in the permits, sets whether an escort rides along, and fixes the route. If you are not sure whether your beam crosses the threshold, the permits guide lays out where the line sits and the two things that catch people out.
Put your own numbers in
The cost tab adds up the driver, the road and the paperwork from your own route and your own dates, and tells you what it works out to per day for whoever is driving. Open the cost planner.
