What does it cost to move a boat from Massachusetts to Florida?

The longest of the Northeast runs, which is the whole point, the extra day is where the money is.

A road move on the owner’s own rig has to cover the driver’s days, flights out and home, lodging and meals on the road, fuel at towing mileage rather than highway mileage, tolls, permits in every state the load crosses, escorts where the beam requires them, and haul-out and launch at either end.

A professional transporter with their own truck and trailer prices differently, because the equipment, the authority and the insurance are all theirs. Comparing the two on headline price alone is misleading, they are different products, and the honest comparison is what the whole job costs door to water.

The number that decides everything

Whatever the total, the figure that determines whether the move actually happens is what the driver earns per day, and this is the run where that bites hardest. From Buzzards Bay, the South Coast or Boston it is roughly 1,450 to 1,550 miles to Florida, the farthest of the Northeast starts. That is often the difference between a three-day fall run and a fourth day on the road, and a permitted load only moves in daylight, so the short days of November stretch it further. Put your own day rate in and see whether the extra distance still clears it.

Rather than publish a number that will be wrong for your boat, the cost planner lets you enter real quotes and see the total, and what it works out to per day for whoever is driving. The timing guide shows why the fall run runs long.

The Massachusetts part nobody warns you about

Off the Cape before the road begins

If the boat winters on Cape Cod, the move starts at a bridge. Everything leaving the Cape by road crosses the canal on one of two spans, the Bourne or the Sagamore, and both are known pinch points for anything wide. A permitted oversize load crosses on its allowed hours, sometimes with an escort, and in season the traffic on either approach is its own delay.

It is one short leg, but it is the one that sets the clock on day one, and a driver who has done it before knows which bridge and which hour the permit will name. Off the Cape and onto the interstate, the rest of Massachusetts is a straight if long run to the corridor south.

What sets the paperwork

Beam decides most of it

Anything wider than 8 feet 6 inches is an oversize load in Massachusetts, the same as in every state the boat will cross on the way down. The beam is what pulls in the permits, sets whether an escort rides along, and fixes the route. If you are not sure whether your beam crosses the threshold, the permits guide lays out where the line sits and the two things that catch people out.

Put your own numbers in

The cost tab adds up the driver, the road and the paperwork from your own route and your own dates, and tells you what it works out to per day for whoever is driving. Open the cost planner.
